Aussi je vous en conjure par tout ce qu' il peut y avoir d' appel pressant dans le Christ, de persuasion dans l' Amour, de communion dans l' Esprit, de tendresse compatissante,

Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

Ainsi donc, mes bien-aimés, avec cette obéissance dont vous avez toujours fait preuve, et qui doit paraître, non seulement quand je suis là, mais bien plus encore maintenant que je suis absent, travaillez avec crainte et tremblement à accomplir votre salut :

Holding forth the word of life; that I may rejoice in the day of Christ, that I have not run in vain, neither laboured in vain.

But ye know the proof of him, that, as a son with the father, he hath served with me in the gospel.

Because for the work of Christ he was nigh unto death, not regarding his life, to supply your lack of service toward me.

c' est pour l' oeuvre du Christ qu' il a failli mourir, ayant risqué sa vie pour vous suppléer dans le service que vous ne pouviez me rendre vous-mêmes.
