5 The last letter of the Malagasy Alphabet. It is pronounced as s in the English word bays. When a word ending in -ka or -tra is joined to another word beginning with z, the -ka or -tra is rejected, and the z becomes j, as: Satro-jovy [satroka and zovy], Tongo-jaza [tongotra and zaza] . When the verbal prefix Man- is added to words commencing with z, the z becomes j, as Manjo [man- and zo.] The same occurs when the preposition Any is prefixed to words beginning with z, as: Anjovy [any and zovy].
